Dar-es-Salaam - City Tour
|
1) Dar Es Salaam city tour. Departure: 0900 hrs.
Dar Es Salaam, which is Arabic for ‘Haven of peace', was a small fishing village in the 19 th century. Though Dodoma is now the Capital city of Tanzania, Dar Es Salaam remains the largest and the most highly populated by far. This city tour entails a visit to the Dar Es Salaam national museum, National museum of arts (Nyumba ya Sanaa), Karibu art and craft gallery, the askari monument and the botanical gardens. Lunch is at one of the various restaurants in town. In the afternoon a visit to Dar Es Salaam's bustling fish market. Return to the hotel late in the afternoon.

Dar-es-Salaam - Pugu Hills

A leisurely drive to the South West of Dar Es Salaam leads to Pugu Hills. Where important mission stations were established including Pugu Secondary school where Julius Nyarere (Tanzania's First president) was working as a teacher before he ventured into politics full-time. |

The forest here part of which, is gazetted as protected area is home to various wildlife e.g. Leopards, bush babies, civets and a great number of bird species. |
|
Hiking is possible in this area on designated paths. A walk to the viewpoint gives a panoramic view of Dar Es Salaam. |
|
Lunch at the Pugu Hills restaurant, which also has a swimming pool. |
|
After a leisurely afternoon, return to the City arriving by dusk. |

70 Km from Dar Es Salaam is the small town of Bagamoyo, the former capital and chief port of Tangayika. Bagamoyo is a Swahili word that means ‘here I lay down my heart'. |

A walk on the beautiful beaches or perhaps a swim is possible. A visit to the dhow builders near the port is worth the time. We proceed further on to the small museum, which displays the history of Bagamoyo, on the same compound is the chapel where Livingstone's body was laid before being taken to Zanzibar town enroute to Westminster Abbey. |

Lunch at one of the hotels or resorts in the area, serving different cuisines. |

Drive back in the afternoon arriving in Dar Es Salaam by dusk. |

Yes in deed it is a spice tour, it entails a visit to small private farms where different types of spices and fruits are grown. Zanzibar is famous for spices such as black pepper, cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, nutmeg and many more, one gets a chance to taste tropical fruits such as Zanzibar Apple (Tufah), Dirupes (coconut), Rambutans (lychees) and many others and a glimpse of rare plants like henna, perfume tree and lipstick tree. |

The spice tour ends with a visit to a visit to some historical places such as Persian Baths at Kidichi built in 1850. |

A drive 35 km South East of Zanzibar Town gets us to the largest area of mature forest left on Unguja. It hosts the rare Red Colobus monkey as well as Sykes monkeys, bushbabies, Ader's Duikers, dassies, over 50 species of butterflies and 40 species of birds.
There is a nature trail in the forest, which enables for the better viewing of these various species of fauna and also the flora.

To get the feel of this ancient Arabic city, one needs a guided tour with a lot of time to go round the city.
The tour entails a visit to the town market, the busiest place in Town. The market has a wide array of tropical fruit, spices and fish. The Anglican Church built by Bishop Steers in 1874 on the old slave market is worth a visit. The tour further takes you the Zanzibar museum, the old Arab Fort built by Omani Arabs. To top it all is a walk through the narrow lanes of the oldest part of Stone Town with a visit to the curio shops. The tour ends with a visit to the Maruhubi Palace ruins built in 1880-1882 by Sultan Sayyid Barghash Said.

Chumbe Island marine Park is an inhabited island 12 km South of Zanzibar. It was gazetted in 1994 and is Zanzibar's first marine sanctuary. |

Transfer in the morning to the Mbweni ruins beach for a 40 minutes boat ride to Chumbe Island. |

A full day visit to this island enables one to walk along the exceptional shallow water of its western shore, noted for its diversity in corals and fish life. The island is also a haven for the endangered Hawks bill Turtles and home to over 50 species of birds. |
